The Beating Continues-
Old Boys 33, UTRFC 20
April 27, 2002- Using great continuity and support,
the Old Boys hammered out a 33-20 victory in the A side match. The
UTRFC B side claimed a hard fought 12-7
victory over the much larger contingent of old boys.
B side- UTRFC B siders claimed their second
win in a row in this series that always features a steady rotation
of Old Boys (this year- 38) taking turns beating on the young undergrads.
This year's format featured five 15-minute periods. After a scoreless
first period, the young bucks got on the board with some nifty backline
work as center Jason Gruner fed the freshman sensation Omar Tinko
who touched it down in the corner. The conversion was badly missed
and the young bucks led 5-0. In the third period the Old Boys got
on the board with a try of their own and the score was tied 5-5.
In the fourth period, the young bucks used a high kick ahead as
Todd Van Dyke provided the pressure, and Randall Tonini gathered
the loose ball and raced the final 30 meters for the try. The conversion
was successful and the young bucks led by the final margin, 12-5.
Several items of special note from this match including the second
period which pitted father vs. son on the front row with Bill "Yamaha"
Peterson matched up against his son, Eric Peterson. Also of note
is the fact that the Old Boys went scoreless in the final two periods
dispite playing much of it with 16 and 17 players on the field at
one time.

A-Side- The Old Boys opened the match with
great determination and purpose, scoring two tries in route to a
12-0 lead. Bryan Halfacre and Ed Everett led the way with the early
Old Boy heroics. UT answered with Tom Jallo punching one across
to close the gap to 12-7. Everett, who also served as the A side
captain, got his second try of the half and the Old Boys are back
up, 19-5. The Old Boys then sandwiched a try (Brian Silkwood) in
between two by UT (Josh Peay and Jeremy Linne) to make the half-time
score 26-15.
In the second half, UT came out strong and crisply
moved the ball down the field to score a try (Jason Barnes) closing
the score to an uncomfortable 26-20 in favor of the old boys. At
this point the Old Boy pucker factor was extremely high. At about
mid way through the hard fought period, Bryan Halfacre scored his
second try of the day and the Old Boys stretched the lead to a more
comfortable 33-20.
