UT Old Boys Display Dominance During 2001 Alumni Weekend
Young Bucks Come From Behind to Take B Match
April 28, 2001- UTRFC welcomed the Alumni back to Knoxville with two spirited contests at the Fulton Bottoms Rugby Park on a beautiful last Saturday in April. The Young Bucks played 30 players on the day against an seemingly unending supply of capable old boys. The day featured the traditional Old Boy format- B side first that consisted of 5 15-20 minute periods, followed by an A side match with two 40 minute halves.

B Match- The first period opened and the young bucks quickly provided themselves a 5-0 lead thanks to a Brad Colson try. Old Boy Chris Mott soon answered with two well struck penalty goals to take the lead 5-6. The second period was a scoreless affair, the only one of the day. In the third period, Brian Silkwood broke loss for two tries to give the young bucks what they thought to be a comfortable 17-6 lead. In the fourth period, the Old Boys answered the call with two tries and after four periods the score was 17-16. In the final period, the Old Boys stormed ahead on the strength of a try as a result of some relentless rucking and punishing running leaving the score 17-23 in favor of the alumni. With five minutes remaining, Silkwood once again found space after fullback Todd Van Dyke filled in the line to retrieve a beautifully thrown skip pass. Van Dyke broke the gain line and dished to Silkwood who evaded a would-be old boy tackler and touched it down. Legendary flyhalf Omar Tinko converted to give the Young Bucks a slim 24-23 lead. But, the Old Boys weren't going away quietly. They quickly pushed the ball inside the 22 meter line and began to pound away of the weary young bucks. Time expired with the Old Boys five meters away from victory after the young bucks held up a runner in a maul causing the takeaway. With the victory, the UTRFC B side finishes the 2000-2001 campaign undefeated.

A Match- The Old Boys opened up the scoring with two long penalty kicks from Josh Holt to give the Old Boys a 6-0 lead. Senior Scott Jones soon answered with a penalty goal of his own to cut the margin to 6-3. Flanker Mike Merschat went across for the Old Boys for a 11-3 lead. Then, just prior to the half, wing Greg Broyles and #8 Mark Wenger both reached pay dirt to make the half-time score 23-3. The men in orange had hung on well in the first half but were clearly a tired team. The Old Boys, using excellent ball transfer and go forward, had tired the young bucks by demanding excellent defense for the first 40 minutes. In the second half the powerful Old Boy forwards began to find seams in the defense and scored five tries in 20 minutes (Paul Cureton, Ed Everett, Scott Adcox, Greg Broyles, and Mark Szydlo) building a commanding 52-3 lead. At that point, the Old Boys seemed content to run out the clock so that they could return to the friendly sidelines and accept the accolades from their adoring fans. However, during the final 10 minutes, the young bucks reached down and, while exhausted, leaned on pride and determination to finish with a flurry. First Jason Barnes rumbled 20 meters from a penalty to get the touch down under the posts. Scott Jones converted to make it 52-10. Then just before time expired, Scott Jones broke free eluding two tacklers to touch in down between the posts. Jones' conversion proved to be the final points of the day and the Old Boys were once again the dominant team at Fulton Bottoms, claiming a 52-17 victory.
